changes that cannot be reversed. Short residence times also imply A technique is described for determining the cooling history of olivine that large unzoned cores of high-Fo phenocrysts cannot reflect diffusive phenocrysts. The technique is based on the analysis of the diffusive re-equilibration of originally zoned phenocrysts. The unzoned cores re-equilibration of melt inclusions trapped by olivine phenocrysts are a result of fast efficient accumulation of olivines from the during crystallization. The mechanism of re-equilibration involves crystallizing magma, i.e. olivines are separated from the magma diffusion of Fe from and Mg into the initial volume of the inclusion. faster than melt changes its composition. Thus, the main source of The technique applies to a single crystal, and thus the cooling high-Fo crystals in the erupted magmas is the cumulate layers of history of different phenocrysts in a single erupted magma can be the magmatic system. In other words, olivine-phyric rocks represent established. We show that melt inclusions in high-Fo olivine mixtures of an evolved transporting magma (which forms the phenocrysts from mantle-derived magmas are typically partially regroundmass of the rock) with crystals that were formed during equilibrated with their hosts at temperatures below trapping. Our crystallization of more primitive melt(s). Unlike high-Fo olivine analysis demonstrates that at a reasonable combination of factors phenocrysts, the evolved magma may reside in the magmatic system such as (1) cooling interval before eruption (<350°C), (2) eruption for a long time. This reconciles long magma residence times estimated temperatures (>1000°C), and (3) inclusion size (<70 m in from the compositions of rocks with short residence times of highradius), partial re-equilibration of up to 85% occurs within Fo olivine phenocrysts. 3–5 months, corresponding to cooling rates faster than 1–2°/day. Short residence times of high-Fo phenocrysts suggest that if eruption does not happen within a few months after a primitive magma begins cooling and crystallization, olivines that crystallize from it

Mineral chemistry of the Tissint meteorite: Indications of two-stage crystallization in a closed system

The Tissint meteorite is a geochemically depleted, olivine-phyric shergottite. Olivine megacrysts contain 300–600 lm cores with uniform Mg# (~80 1) followed by concentric zones of Fe-enrichment toward the rims. We applied a number of tests to distinguish the relationship of these megacrysts to the host rock. Major and trace element compositions of the Mg-rich core in olivine are in equilibrium ...

Crystal size distribution analysis of plagioclase in Neogene-Quaternary olivine basaltic lava flows in Dehaj-Javazm area, northwest of Shahre-Babak, Kerman

1. Introduction The rather limited Neogene-Quaternary olivine basaltic lava flows are outcropped in the Dehaj-Javazm area, north of Share-Babak, in the NW of Dehaj-Sarduieh magmatic belt as a part of the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic assemblage (UDMA). The rocks contain significant amounts of plagioclase both as phenocrysts and microliths in the microlithic groundmass which play an important role i...

Petrogenesis of volcanic rocks from Razei region in Northwest Ardabil, Iran

The Razei region in the northwest of Ardabil is considered a part of West Alborz-Azerbaijan. Rocks in this area were created by Eocene volcanic activities. These rocks range from andesite to olivine basalt. The common texture of these rocks is Porphyritic with microlithic matrix. The phenocrysts of these rocks are often clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and olivine. The texture is made of microlithic...

Magmatic interactions as recorded in plagioclase phenocrysts of quaternary volcanics in SE Bam (SE Iran)

In the southeast of bam, there is a collection of volcanic rocks with andesite, basalt and trachy andesite composition. The texture of these rocks are often porphyritic with microlithic, porphyric cavity, and sometimes glomerulophorphuri, sore throat trachytic. Main minerals include Olivine, Clinopyroxene, Plagioclase and secondary minerals including opaque minerals, Iodenzyte, secondary Biotit...

Petrography, geochemistry and petrogenesis of Damavand volcano: Comparison of different volcanic generations

1-Introduction Damavand volcano was formed by explosive and non-explosive eruptions on the old eroded rock units (Mesozoic and older) of Central Alborz during the Quaternary period and formed two huge cone (Old and Young Damavand). Davidson et al. (2004) determined the time of Old-Damavand activity from 1800 to 800 thousand years ago by measuring Ar/Ar and U-Th/He methods. According to their ...
